What role should the United States play in the world today and in coming years? What are the challenges before us? What issues are of most concern to us? What kind of world do we want in the 21st century? This lesson engages students in these questions. Students engage in active consideration of historical and current background material and are placed in the role of decision-makers as they explore divergent policy alternatives. After exploring divergent views, students deliberate together on the merits and tradeoffs of each. Finally, students express their own considered judgments on future policy direction. The lesson includes Guidelines for Deliberation, Scholars Online Video Clips, and Rubrics for Deliberative Dialogue.
