From Mr. Raymond’s Civics and Social Studies Academy

This lesson teaches students about Federalism – the sharing of power between the national, state and local levels of government.

Students will learn:

• the separation of powers and responsibilities between the three levels
• various labels of “expressed” or “delegated powers” for the national government, “concurrent powers” for shared, and “reserved powers” for the states
• how the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution established the concept and name for state powers, as well as how Article VI of the Constitution, aka the Supremacy Clause, established the hierarchy of state laws and constitutions in relationship to federal laws and the U.S. Constitution
• various “fed” words
• overview of how the three branches of government are set up at all three levels of government and what their responsibilities are
• the lawmaking process at all three levels
• concept of Layer Cake Federalism v. Marble Cake Federalism
• the concept of the continuing debate over responsibilities of Federal v. State Governments as seen through the eyes of the Federalists and Anti-Federalists and today’s Democrats v. Republicans
