Author:  Patricia Lutz, for the Local Government Association of Australia

A collection of 4 units to teach younger students about local government.  Leads students through identifying their community,  what kinds of work people do in the community, who governs and how decisions are made.  Although designed for Australian schools, the lessons would be easily adaptable to any early elementary classroom.  Units could be separated if time requires.

Objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of what is meant by a community
  • Gain a deeper understanding of what a community needs
  • Investigate and gain knowledge of how social systems work
  • Develop a sense of identity and interdependence within a community
  • Participate in active citizenship and develop skills in life long learning
  • Have a clearer understanding of the role of local government
