Author: Washington State Courts

Students consider the facts in the real case of a boy who was expelled from school.  They break into small groups to list the arguments for one of the parties in the case.  The groups share their arguments in a class discussion.  The lesson also includes a link to a video about the Washington State Supreme Court and the case of Gardner v. Loomis, as well as discussion questions about the case.

Objectives:

  • Students will analyze the facts from a case.
  • Students will formulate arguments based on the facts.
  • Students will argue their case.
  • Students will understand how an appeal differs from a trial.
