Symbols of America

This 3 week unit will teach first graders about the symbols that define America. The major areas that this unit will focus on are: The President, The Liberty Bell, The American Flag, The Bald Eagle, The Statue of Liberty, and Mount Rushmore.  American civilization, math, geography, language arts, and art are some of the subject areas covered. Activities could be separated if time does not allow for all of them.

Objectives:

  • Students will be able to identify the President of the United States.
  • Students will be able to identify the White House, where it is and its function.
  • Students will understand some of the President’s responsibilities.
  • Students will understand voting and participate in a mock election.
  • Students will be able to identify the United States Flag and understand its history.
  • Students will learn the Pledge of Allegiance and understand it.
  • Students will identify the Statue of Liberty, its location and meaning
  • Students will identify the Liberty Bell, its location and meaning.
  • Students will understand the Bald Eagle as a symbol of the United States.
  • Students will be able to identify the presidents on Mount Rushmore.
