Kneeling during the national anthem, burning the American flag, burning draft cards, hanging effigies of political leaders — these are all examples of symbolic speech, or nonverbal acts of expression, used throughout American history. How have government attempts to stifle controversial symbolic speech fared, from colonial times to the present?  Stephen Solomon, First Amendment expert and historian, explains.
