For use in conjunction with “The Trial of Susan B. Anthony,” by Ann D. Gordon (available here). In November 1872, Susan B. Anthony voted in a United States election. Subsequently she was arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced to pay a fine of $100.00 and the costs of prosecution. To what extent did this event advance the cause of voting rights for women? Analyze the factors that contributed to the level of success ultimately achieved. Students are provided with ten primary source documents to write essays that cite key pieces of evidence.
