Why do we celebrate Independence Day?

Activity Documents and Handouts -

  • The Road to Independence PowerPoint Presentation
  • Copies of Primary Sources: the Boston Tea Party, The First Blow for Liberty, Washington Taking Command, and the Declaration of Independence painting
  • Inching Toward Independence Graphic Organizer

Students:

  • examine primary sources, including by not limited to, artifacts, documents, maps, and photographs.
  • identify and describe the role of symbolic documents such as the Constitution, the Bill ofRights, and the Declaration of Independence.
  • describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text.

Students Investigating Primary Sources (SIPS) is a K-12 collection of brief introductory mini-lessons centered on particular topics and primary sources.
