Tribal Structure Activity: Read the excerpts that establish the structure of government from two different tribal constitutions. Then consider the pros and cons for each style..

Searching for Sovereignty Activity: Select one historical conflict among the three sovereign governments (tribal, state, federal) and research the conflict, considering all perspectives. Use a separate piece of paper to answer the accompanying questions.

Students will:

Define sovereignty as it relates to American Indian an Alaska Native tribes
Explain the purpose of a tribal government
Demonstrate understanding of the structures, functions and powers of tribal governments
Explain how the federal government is a component of sovereignty for American Indian and Alaska Native tribes
Identify roles and relationships among federal, tribal, and state governments
