Students consider the facts in the real case of a boy who was expelled from school. They break into small groups to list the arguments for one of the parties in the case. The groups share their arguments in a class discussion. The lesson also includes a link to a video about the Washington State Supreme Court and the case of Gardner v. Loomis, as well as discussion questions about the case.
Objectives:
- Students will analyze the facts from a case.
- Students will formulate arguments based on the facts.
- Students will argue their case.
- Students will understand how an appeal differs from a trial.
