3 Umbrellas and 4th Amendment Search Protection

Grade
9-12
Lesson Duration

Three sizes of umbrellas (golf, regular, cocktail) are used to categorize search scenarios, asking students to use search analysis questions: (1) Is there a recognized expectation of privacy and (2) What is the government’s need for the information? After students are skilled at asking these questions, they are better equipped to apply exceptions and analyze emerging 4th Amendment issues.

Lesson includes several options of engaging strategies.
